What is the Occupational English Test?

OET (Occupational English Test) is designed to meet the specific English language needs of the healthcare sector. It assesses the language proficiency of healthcare professionals who wish to practise in an English-speaking environment.

OET has been developed specifically for 12 healthcare professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science.

All four language skills are assessed, with Writing and Speaking tests available in 12 different areas of healthcare. All candidates sit the same Reading and Listening tests.

OET is accepted as proof of English proficiency in the Ireland, US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Namibia and Singapore. Many organisations, including hospitals, universities and colleges, are using OET as proof of a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in a demanding healthcare environment.

The Exam Centre of Ireland has been an official OET test centre since 2018. We have been in business since 2004 and we are Ireland’s only Cambridge Platinum grade exam centre. The Platinum status is awarded for outstanding customer care and service. Cambridge is an official partner in the OET Exams. We also an IDP IELTS test centre. We run all IDP Official IELTS tests in Ireland both paper based and computer delivered.  Since opening the OET Test Centre, we have had hundreds of OET candidates through our doors. Our test centre is fully-equipped and presents a comfortable, professional environment.

What time do I need to arrive at the OET Richmond Education centre venue on the test day?

You need to arrive at The Exam Centre of Ireland, Dublin between 8:00 and 8:30 (click here for a map)

What do I have to bring on the test day?

You will be asked to leave your bags, coats, watches etc. in a separate room. Please make sure you leave your mobile phones there as well – and make sure that they are switched off.

You may only bring into the test room:
• Non-mechanical pens or pencils
• Erasers, a pencil sharpener
• A Face Mask
• A bottle of still water in a clear plastic bottle
• Your ID document

 

When you register for the test, you must provide your valid passport or EU National ID card as proof of identity.

If you do not have a valid passport or EU National ID card please complete this form when you register to take the test.

Valuables: It is strongly recommended that you do not bring valuables with you on the test day. The Exam Centre of Ireland cannot take responsibility for the loss or damage of your personal belongings.

How long does the OET exam take?

The three modules in the morning take about two hours and 40 minutes: Listening (approximately 45 minutes), Reading (60 minutes) and Writing (45 minutes).

The Speaking module are held on the same day in the same venue and commence directly after the written components. Each candidate’s speaking test takes around 20 minutes.
